Outbound Journey: American Airlines New Flagship Suites & London Layover

Alexandria: Greco-Roman Wonders, Coastal Palaces & Mediterranean Heritage
Alexandria offers a captivating contrast to upper Egypt, blending classical Hellenistic, Roman, and 19th-century royal heritage along the Mediterranean coast.
Alexandria Day 1: The Greco-Roman Museum
We began at the newly reopened Greco-Roman Museum, beautifully restored after a multi-year project. The museum houses over 10,000 artifacts illustrating how Greek mythology and Roman imperial artistry merged seamlessly with ancient Egyptian culture following the conquest of Alexander the Great.
Alexandria Day 2: Roman Amphitheater, Roman Baths & Royal Palaces
On our second day, we explored the Roman Amphitheater of Kom El Dikka—the only known Roman amphitheater discovered in Egypt—complete with marble seating, mosaic galleries, and ancient public bath ruins (*thermae*).

Our Alexandria itinerary also included the striking disc-shaped Bibliotheca Alexandrina (The New Library of Alexandria), the grand Abu El-Abbas El-Mursi Mosque, followed by a fresh Mediterranean seafood lunch overlooking the harbor. In the afternoon, we toured the Royal Jewelry Museum, housed in the opulent French Neoclassical palace of Princess Fatma Al-Zahra, showcasing the dazzling diamond-encrusted crowns and jewels of the Muhammad Ali dynasty.

Ancient Masterpieces: The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) & Saqqara Step Pyramid
Two major highlights of our time in Cairo were exploring the brand-new Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) and venturing south into the desert necropolis of Saqqara.
The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM)
The GEM is the largest archaeological museum complex in the world. Walking into the soaring sunlit glass atrium, you are greeted by the 3,200-year-old, 83-ton colossal granite statue of Ramses II. Ascending the monumental Grand Staircase, you pass monumental sarcophagi and pharaonic statues, with panoramic glass walls framing views of the Great Pyramids outside.

Saqqara & The Step Pyramid of Djoser
At Saqqara, we stood before Egypt’s earliest stone pyramid: the 4,700-year-old Step Pyramid of King Djoser, designed in the 27th century BC by the legendary architect Imhotep. Exploring the limestone colonnades and surrounding mastaba tombs with our A&K Egyptologist provided an unforgettable lesson in the birth of monumental stone architecture.

Giza: Marriott Mena House, The Great Pyramids & The Sphinx
There is no hotel in the world with a setting quite like the historic Marriott Mena House, Cairo. Originally built as a royal hunting lodge in 1869, the palace sits surrounded by lush gardens directly at the base of the Great Pyramid of Khufu.

Upper Egypt: The Colossal Temples of Abu Simbel
From Cairo, A&K arranged seamless chartered flights south to Lake Nasser to explore Abu Simbel. Carved directly into sandstone cliffs in the 13th century BC, the Great Temple features four colossal 66-foot seated statues of Ramses II guarding the entrance. Beside it stands the elegant Temple of Hathor, dedicated to Queen Nefertari.
Walking inside the Great Hypostyle Hall flanked by eight colossal Osiris pillars and viewing the inner sanctuary where the sun aligns twice a year was one of the most awe-inspiring moments of the entire expedition.

Aswan: Felucca Sailing, Old Cataract Hotel & Philae Temple
In Aswan, where the Nile flows through dark granite boulders and golden sand dunes, we boarded a traditional wooden Felucca sailboat, gliding past Elephantine Island and the historic Victorian-era Sofitel Legend Old Cataract Hotel (where Agatha Christie penned *Death on the Nile*).
We also explored the Unfinished Obelisk in the ancient granite quarries and took a private boat to Agilkia Island to visit the romantic Temple of Philae, dedicated to Isis, the goddess of motherhood and healing.

Down the Nile: Kom Ombo & The Temple of Horus at Edfu
Cruising north, we visited Kom Ombo, a unique symmetrical double temple dedicated to Sobek (the crocodile god) and Haroeris (Horus the Elder), featuring ancient surgical instrument relief carvings and the adjacent Crocodile Museum.
At Edfu, we arrived at the monumental Temple of Horus, Egypt’s most complete and best-preserved ancient temple, guarded by the iconic black granite statue of Horus as a crowned falcon.

Luxor: Illuminated Night Temples, Avenue of Sphinxes & Valley of the Kings
Arriving in Luxor (ancient Thebes) was the grand finale of our journey. Touring the Temple of Luxor in the evening under dramatic illumination was unforgettable—walking past the 82-foot pink granite obelisk, colossal seated statues of Ramses II, and along the newly restored 1.7-mile Avenue of Sphinxes linking Luxor to Karnak.
On the West Bank, we explored the rock-cut tombs of the New Kingdom pharaohs in the Valley of the Kings, the terraced Mortuary Temple of Queen Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari, and the towering Colossi of Memnon.
