If there is one destination that sits atop the bucket list of every serious traveler I’ve ever met, it is Antarctica. It is the final frontier—a place so remote, so pristine, and so hostile to human life that visiting it feels less like a vacation and more like visiting another planet.
For years, the trade-off for visiting the “White Continent” was comfort. You could go, but you had to do it on a converted research vessel with bunk beds and a mess hall. That era is over.
I recently had the privilege of joining Seabourn Cruises for their 11-day “Great White Continent” itinerary aboard the Seabourn Venture, and I am here to tell you: you can have the rugged adventure of a lifetime and still come home to a heated marble bathroom and a glass of chilled champagne.
Here is my deep dive into what it is really like to sail to the bottom of the world with Seabourn.
The Logistics: A Seamless Start
One of the biggest friction points in Antarctic travel is simply getting there. Most cruises depart from Ushuaia, Argentina, the southernmost city in the world. Getting from the international hub of Buenos Aires to Ushuaia can be a logistical headache involving airport transfers and weight restrictions.

They have reinforced hulls designed to cut through ice that would crush a standard ship.
But the interior? It looks like a Park Avenue hotel.
The Suites: Every single room on the ship is a suite with a private veranda. I stayed in a Veranda Suite, and it was spacious—around 355 square feet. The design is “lodge luxury”—think tactile wool blankets, faux fireplaces on the TV, and mahogany accents.
The most critical feature, however, is the heated drying closet. When you come back from a zodiac cruise soaked in sea spray or snow, you hang your parka, gloves, and hat in this closet. By the time you finish lunch, they are toasty warm and dry. It is a small detail that makes a massive difference in your comfort levels.
The Public Spaces: The heart of the ship is Seabourn Square, a coffee bar/library/living room that serves the best roasted coffee I’ve had at sea. It became my morning ritual to grab a cappuccino and sit by the panoramic windows, watching albatross glide over the wake.
There is also the Bow Lounge on Deck 6, which gives you the closest access to the water. It’s filled with touchscreens showing the ship’s navigational charts and drone footage. It’s the “geek out” zone for those interested in the navigation.
The Crossing: The Drake Passage
Every Antarctic traveler fears the Drake Passage. It is the stretch of ocean between South America and Antarctica where the Atlantic and Pacific oceans collide. It can be the “Drake Lake” (calm) or the “Drake Shake” (rough).
We experienced a bit of the “Shake”—swells around 15-20 feet. But the Seabourn Venture is equipped with advanced stabilizers. While we definitely felt the movement, it wasn’t the violent tossing you might expect on smaller expedition ships.

The Experience: The Great White Continent
On Day 5, we woke up to silence. The rolling waves of the Drake were gone. I opened my curtains and gasped. We were drifting through a gallery of icebergs the size of city blocks. The water was like black glass. We had arrived.
For the next five days, the schedule was dictated by the Captain and the Expedition Leader. This is “expedition travel,” meaning there is no set timetable. If a pod of orcas appears, we stop. If the wind picks up, we move to a protected bay.
The Zodiacs: Twice a day (weather permitting), we suited up for excursions. This brings me to the Mudroom. Located on Deck 3, the Mudroom is the staging area. You have your own locker. You put on your base layers in your suite, then head down to don your boots (loaned by Seabourn) and your Helly Hansen Parka (a gift from Seabourn that you get to keep—and yes, it is a very high-quality coat).
Boarding the Zodiacs is efficient. The crew helps you step in using the “sailor’s grip.” Then, you are off. Zipping around the ice floes in a Zodiac is exhilarating. You are at water level. We had curious Weddell seals pop their heads up right next to the boat. We cruised past leopard seals napping on ice floes, their reptilian smiles visible from just feet away.
The Landings: We made several landings on the continent and surrounding islands. Walking on Antarctica is indescribable. The air is so crisp it feels like it’s scrubbing your lungs.
At one landing, we visited a Gentoo penguin colony. The “penguin highway” rule is real—you must give them right of way. Watching these clumsy, adorable creatures waddle past you, completely unafraid, is a spiritual experience. They are noisy, they smell a bit (truth be told!), but they are utterly charming.
The Submarines: This is the Seabourn exclusive. The ship carries two custom-built submarines. I booked a dive (this is an extra cost, usually a few hundred dollars, and worth every penny). We dove 500 feet below the surface. Antarctica above the water is white and grey. Below the water? It is an explosion of color. Giant sea spiders, bright red krill, jellyfish that look like alien spaceships. It was a perspective 99.9% of humans will never see.
The “Seabourn Difference”
What sets this trip apart from other expedition cruises is what happens after the excursion.
On a typical expedition ship, you return to a basic lunch. On Seabourn, you return to Champagne and Caviar. One afternoon, the crew set up a “Caviar on Ice” party on the pool deck. We were sailing through the Lemaire Channel—one of the most scenic narrow passages in the world—sipping champagne while the staff served caviar from a surfboard carved out of ice. It was surreal.

Sushi in Antarctica: Yes, really. There is a sushi bar in The Club lounge. Eating fresh sashimi while in the Antarctic Sound is a juxtaposition I never knew I needed.
Service: The staff to guest ratio is nearly 1:1. By Day 2, the bartender in the Expedition Lounge knew I liked my Old Fashioned with walnut bitters. The Expedition Team sat with us at dinner, sharing stories of their past winters at research stations. You feel like you are part of a very exclusive explorers club.
Who is this trip for?
This itinerary is for the traveler who wants the maximum experience in the minimum time, without sacrificing luxury. The 11-to-13-day length is perfect. It gives you 5 full days in Antarctica, which is the sweet spot. You see the penguins, the whales, and the ice, but you aren’t away from home for a month.
It is for the person who wants to hike a snowy ridge in the morning but wants a hot stone massage in the afternoon. It is for the person who wants to see the wildest place on earth but wants to do it safely and comfortably.
Final Thoughts
When I returned to Buenos Aires, I felt different. Antarctica changes you. The sheer scale of nature there makes you feel small in the best possible way.
